At the IGC we have been using our internally developed program to simulate complex demographic scenarios, SINS (Simulating INdividuals in Space), to simulate scenarios of habitat loss and fragmentation and to study how these events may affect the genetic patterns of populations. SINS helps us comparing different explanations for the data that we observe in the field. We also aim to use SINS to extract useful information about the demographic history of the endangered populations that we are studying.
One problem we can explore with SINS is that of population expansions. Since SINS is around the corner (we are nearly ready to submit the first draft), we show here a simple scenario a population expanding. Soon you will be ready to test and try SINS for yourself!
